# A Stilus alternative for your novel

If you used Stilus to check your Spanish text and need another checker, Journzy checks grammar, style and orthotypography in a novel and also checks the story against your bible.

## What each tool is

Stilus is a spelling, grammar and style checker for Spanish. The Stilus website did not respond when we checked in October 2026, so this page does not compare its features. It describes what a novel checker needs and how Journzy covers it.

Journzy is a novel writing studio. It checks your text as you write and, on Author, checks the story against the bible. None of its tools rewrites your text: every flag waits for your decision.

## What you need from a novel checker

If you proofread a novel in Spanish, you usually need five things:

- spelling and accents, including the opening marks ¿ and ¡;
- grammar, with the errors that slip through a quick read, such as dequeísmo;
- style: repetition, redundancy and expressions the RAE advises against;
- orthotypography: Spanish quotation marks, the dialogue dash, spacing, italics and capital letters;
- flags you can dismiss, because a novel breaks rules on purpose.

## What Journzy adds for a novel

A checker looks at each sentence. A novel also needs a character's eye color to stay the same from chapter to chapter. On Author, Journzy compares every scene with your story bible and shows the quote that proves each flag. You can mark it as intentional, in case it is an unreliable narrator or a deliberate change.

On Free you get the bible, worldbuilding with maps, outline, versions, beta readers and export. The spelling, grammar, style and orthotypography checks are free too. Features that use AI, such as continuity, are part of Author.

## What Journzy does not do

- It is not a Word add-in.
- It has no WordPress plugin.
- It offers no public API.

Journzy is a writing studio, so you write or import your manuscript in it. It won't check a standalone document kept in another app. It does not check the use of italics either.

## How to bring your manuscript

1. Save your novel as a Word (.docx) or Markdown file, or copy the text.
2. Import it in [write.journzy.com](https://write.journzy.com), or paste it.
3. Check in the preview how the chapters and scenes were split. Journzy saves nothing until you confirm.
4. Open the Proofreading section. You will see flags for the whole book and decide on each one.

## Start free

Import your novel and run the checker on the Free plan. It never expires and needs no API key.

## Frequently asked questions

What happened to Stilus?

The Stilus website did not respond when we checked in October 2026. We do not know more, so we do not compare its features with Journzy's.

Does Journzy check the dialogue dash and the quotation marks?

Yes, on the Free plan. It flags a line that starts with a hyphen instead of a dash, a space after the dash, and misplaced dashes around the narrator's words. For quotation marks, it recommends angular quotes « » at the first level, and you can choose “ ” for the whole book.

Is the checking free?

The rule-based and dictionary checking is: spelling, grammar, style and orthotypography are on Free. The advanced AI review in context and the story continuity check belong to Author, at $19/month or $180/year, plus tax.

Can I use Journzy only as a proofreader?

You can import your manuscript and use only the proofreading. Journzy is a writing studio, not an add-on for other programs, so the text lives in it.

Does it check English too?

Yes. In English it checks typographic quotation marks and apostrophes, the double hyphen, redundancy and forms such as “could of”.
