What NovelCrafter does well

NovelCrafter is a mature studio, and an honest comparison starts there.

  • It writes with you. Its AI drafts scenes from beats, chats with you and summarizes.
  • You pick the model. With your own API key you choose the provider and the model, and power users like that.
  • A strong codex. Reviews describe it as a very complete wiki for characters, places and lore.
  • A cheap way in. Scribe costs $4 a month and includes no AI.
  • Community and documentation. It has an active community, a blog, a help center and video tutorials.

What Journzy does well

  • It checks your manuscript against the bible. In Author, every flag comes with the quote that proves it, and you can mark it as intentional.
  • One flat price, no API key. Author costs $19 a month and there are no usage charges.
  • The AI does not write your text. It has no path to generate, rewrite or expand the manuscript.
  • A complete studio on Free. Story bible, worldbuilding with maps, outlining, versions, beta readers, style checks and export are all included in Free.

What Journzy does not do

  • It does not generate text, whether a scene, a continuation or a rewrite. That is a design decision. If you want to co-write with an AI, NovelCrafter fits better.
  • It does not let you pick a model or bring your own key.
  • It is a new product, without NovelCrafter's years of community and documentation.
  • The continuity check belongs to Author. The Free plan does not include it.

NovelCrafter pricing: what it really costs

The four plans run from $4 to $20 a month. The AI starts at Hobbyist, $8, and uses your API key, so usage is paid separately to your provider. Third-party reviews mention $10 to $50 more a month. Those figures are anecdotal, and some reviews come from rival tools. Treat them only as a rough guide.

Author costs $19/month or $180/year in Journzy, with no charges for AI use. To start without spending, Free costs $0; Scribe costs $4. Note that Free includes no AI.

Who should choose which

Choose NovelCrafter if you:

  • want the AI to draft scenes and brainstorm with you in a chat;
  • want to pick the provider and the model, and accept managing an API key;
  • value a big community and plenty of documentation.

Choose Journzy if you:

  • write every word yourself and do not want an AI touching the manuscript;
  • want a flat price, or free, without watching an API key's usage;
  • have a long novel and need something to check continuity, with the evidence in front of you;
  • write in Spanish or English and want a tool that is native in both.

How to move from NovelCrafter to Journzy

Your whole manuscript moves over. The codex does not import as it is, but there is a way to rebuild the bible.

  1. In NovelCrafter, open Export and choose Word (.docx) or Markdown, prose only, with act and chapter titles switched on.
  2. Import the file in write.journzy.com. You can also paste the text.
  3. Check in the preview how the chapters and scenes were split, and fix what looks wrong. Journzy saves nothing until you confirm.
  4. For the bible, export your NovelCrafter codex. On Author, bible extraction after the import proposes characters and places with their quote, and you accept or reject each one. On Free, use the zip as a checklist and fill in the sheets by hand.
