Format and export your book: DOCX, EPUB and print PDF
Journzy is book formatting software that exports DOCX, EPUB and print PDF from the same manuscript. You choose the design, preview it on a phone, tablet and e-reader, and read the KDP-ready checks before you upload.
Export to DOCX, EPUB and print PDF
One manuscript gives you three formats: EPUB for ebook stores, a print-ready PDF, and DOCX for Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs. The DOCX offers two layouts.
- Manuscript submission. The standard format for agents and editors: Times New Roman 12, double-spaced.
- Book layout. Your design and your trim size, ready to upload to KDP.
Export is on the Free plan.
Book formatting software: styles, typography and margins
You start from one of four styles: classic, contemporary, romance or literary. Then you adjust whatever you like, and Journzy saves the design for each book.
- Text. Seven typefaces, size, line spacing, indented or spaced paragraphs, justification and hyphenation.
- Chapters. Numbering in words or digits, drop caps, small caps on the first line, chapters that open on a right-hand page, and your own scene break symbol.
- Page. Nine KDP trim sizes, from 5 × 8 inches up to 8.5 × 11 inches, white or cream paper, margins, running heads and page numbers.
- Book pages. Title page, copyright page, dedication, contents and colophon.
All of the design controls are on the Free plan.
Device previews and KDP-ready checks
Before you export, you see the book on a phone, an e-reader and a tablet. The preview is approximate, because each reader's settings can change the font and size. The print PDF has its own preview.
The KDP-ready checks warn you about a missing title or author, a cover that is too small, the cover ratio, the page count of the PDF and the inner margin. They are advice and never stop an export. Journzy does not publish to KDP for you: you upload the finished file yourself.
KDP and other stores ask whether AI generated parts of your book. When you export, Journzy asks for that disclosure by category: text, images and translation. Journzy's AI never writes your text. All of this is on the Free plan.
DOCX to EPUB: import your Word or Markdown file
If your book already lives in Word, you import the DOCX, adjust the design and export the EPUB. You can import Markdown too. Import is on the Free plan. With Author, Journzy can also propose story bible entries from the text you imported.
