The usage figures are anecdotal and some of those reviews come from rival tools, so treat them as a range, not a measurement. One honest note: to start without AI, Scribe costs $4 and Journzy's Free plan costs $0, but Free does not include the AI checks.

What NovelCrafter's AI does, and what Journzy's AI does

NovelCrafter's AI writes with you. It drafts scenes from beats, chats about ideas (from Artisan) and summarizes, leaning on your codex. You pick the model and pay the usage.

Journzy's AI reads. On Author it compares every scene with your story bible and shows the quote that proves each flag, which you can mark as intentional. It proposes bible entries, and you accept or reject them. It cannot write, rewrite or expand your manuscript.

NovelCrafter reviews: an honest summary

What gets praised: the codex, which reviews describe as a very complete wiki, the freedom to choose a model, a low entry price and an active community that publishes documentation and tutorials.

What gets criticized: a hard start (an April 2026 Medium review calls it powerful but frustrating to set up), a chat that cannot see the manuscript until you add it as context, and a cost that is hard to predict when the subscription and the API key add up. Some of those reviews are written by rivals of NovelCrafter, and so is this page, so read it all with that caution.

How to move your codex into a Journzy story bible

Your whole manuscript moves over. Journzy does not import the codex zip, but you can rebuild the bible without starting from scratch.

  1. In NovelCrafter, open Export and choose Word (.docx) or Markdown, prose only, with act and chapter titles switched on.
  2. Import the file in write.journzy.com. Check the chapter and scene preview: Journzy saves nothing until you confirm.
  3. Export your codex too. It is a zip with one file per entry, and it works as a checklist of names and aliases.
  4. On Author, bible extraction after the import reads the manuscript and proposes characters and places with their quote. You accept, edit or reject each proposal.
  5. On Free, create the sheets by hand with the zip as a guide.
